OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The fact that users like you have navigated to this page demonstrates that you are aware of the challenges facing transgender people in the workplace, and in fact, in the search for meaningful employment.
Unemployment and underemployment represent the single greatest challenge facing transgender individuals and the transgender community at large. The transgender community currently suffers from the highest rate of unemployment of any minority group, with estimates as high as 80%.
Thousands of educated, experienced and qualified individuals find themselves out of work or forced to accept lower paying positions unrelated to their chosen field, just to make ends meet.
Common misconceptions concerning transgender people tend to distract potential employers from an individual’s qualifications, creating the perception of a transgender person seeking employment, as opposed to viewing job candidates as a qualified individual who happens to be transgender.
Currently, the transgender community enjoys protection against discrimination in only ten of fifty states. Though this situation is slowly improving, we still have a long way to go before we achieve the protection and opportunities we deserve. There are numerous employers with hiring policies in place that are inclusive of gender identity and expression in the workplace. Many major corporations are included among these employers.
The primary mission of TG Works will be to make the connection between these employers and qualified transgender job candidates. In recent years, we have observed the power of the internet at work in the consolidation of the transgender community, making information and resources available to people worldwide, and overcoming the barrier of isolation that has been the common and defining trait among an otherwise diverse population.
In the coming months, we will be working to establish a database of resumes from you, the transgender community, and reaching out to human resource professionals in all areas of industry, government and public and private institutions to make them aware of the tremendous resource at their disposal through our web based interface. We hope to make opportunities available to transgender job seekers of which they may not have been previously aware, and to provide the means for transgender candidates to be considered for meaningful employment in their chosen field.
As we work to implement the database management features necessary to make this a reality, we will continue to update the site, adding resource links and news items of interest to the transgender community. We encourage you to contribute to this effort by suggesting links and information that you feel are important. You are also welcome to contribute articles of interest, and to offer your suggestions as to how we might serve the transgender community. We look forward to hearing from you.
